TL/DR –
Attorney General Ellison and a coalition of attorneys general issued a statement in response to an FDA review of mifepristone, which was prompted by a letter from Republican state attorneys general asking for the drug’s restrictions or removal from the market. The attorneys general vowed to protect access to mifepristone if it is challenged.
Mifepristone Continues to Remain Safe Amidst FDA Scrutiny
On 29th September 2025, Attorney General Ellison, along with a coalition of attorneys general, issued a joint statement addressing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) review of mifepristone. The review was mentioned by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Makary, responding to a letter from Republican state attorneys general urging the FDA to impose restrictions or withdraw mifepristone from the market.
According to the statement, “Mifepristone has been used safely and effectively for over 25 years, both in the United States and worldwide. It currently serves as the prevalent method for early-term abortion care in the U.S and the standard protocol for managing early miscarriage. The decision to reconsider access to this medication was prompted by an unscientific letter, overlooking decades of research confirming mifepristone’s safety and effectiveness. Medical decisions should be guided by science, not political agendas, and be left between the patient, their family, and healthcare provider.”
The attorneys general emphasized their responsibility to uphold state laws and safeguard their residents, including their access to reproductive care. They pledged to take action if access to mifepristone is threatened.
The statement gained the backing of attorney generals from 19 areas, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.
