Attempted Carjacking Incident on I-240 in East Asheville

On Saturday morning, 65-year-old Arthur Gilliam found himself the victim of an attempted carjacking on I-240 in East Asheville. The assailant was a man wanted by law enforcement in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

“I thought I would die,” Gilliam disclosed. Maintaining calmness and avoiding a head-on collision with a car trailed by police was crucial for his survival.

The high-speed chase was initiated when a Black Mountain Police Department license plate reader identified the suspect, Charles Judy, 51, driving a stolen car along I-40 eastbound. This chase put Gilliam face-to-face with Judy at the River Ridge shopping strip exit.

As a U.S. Airforce veteran with four years as a weapons controller tech, Gilliam discerned Judy’s intention to hijack his car and escape the police. Judy had clipped Gilliam’s car on the front passenger side bumper before attempting to hijack it.

Gilliam narrates his encounter with Judy, “He said ‘drive!’ I responded, ‘you just hit me head-on, where am I supposed to go?’ Then, a cop aiming a gun at us shouted, ‘put your hands up.’ I told him, ‘Dude he’s talking to you!’”

Gilliam witnessed the arrest of Charles Judy, who is currently in Buncombe County Jail facing potential federal charges.

Judy is wanted for multiple carjackings and armed robberies, according to Steve Parker, Chief of Police for Black Mountain. Judy also faces charges in West Virginia and possibly Virginia.

Asheville police, Black Mountain police, and other law enforcement agencies were commended for their swift arrest of Judy, who was unarmed at the time of his capture. Gilliam, a father of two aged 10 and 3, was determined not to let Judy threaten his life any further.

“When he said drive, I responded, no. I just want to go home, see my kids, see my family. He disrupted that for me. People think it’ll never happen to them, but it could,” Gilliam warned.
