Grand Rapids Community College Finalists for Student Life Director

Grand Rapids Community College conducted three interviews with the final candidates for the Student Life Director position, vacant since July. Each candidate gave a short presentation and answered questions from faculty and staff about their contributions to GRCC.

The finalists were asked, “How do you envision the Office of Student Life and Conduct supporting one or more of the College’s strategic goals and helping to bring the Strategic Plan to fruition?”

The first candidate, Madison Creutz, is the Assistant Director for the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX and Deputy Title IX Coordinator at Grand Valley State University. She has substantial experience in Title IX and student affairs, particularly student conduct. Creutz emphasized the importance of meeting students where they are and ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed.

Joseph DeDonato, the second candidate, is the Career Planning and Placement Manager at Hillsborough Community College. He views the Student Life and Conduct office as a safe resource hub for students. DeDonato plans to equip his staff with the skills to work with a diverse community and to foster inclusion within the office.

The third candidate, Valerie Butterfield, is GRCC’s registrar. With seven years at GRCC and previous experience in student services at Henry Ford Community College, Butterfield believes the Student Life Director is “the best job on campus”. She aims to increase student engagement and is interested in expanding the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) to support students and involved staff.
