It also suggests an additional $49 million allocation to the Wake County Public School system, taking the total investment to approximately $693 million.
Wake County Budget Hearing for Proposed 2025 Fiscal Year
Residents of Wake County will have the chance to express their views on the 2025 fiscal year budget on Monday. The county commission will conduct its public hearing on May 20, 2 p.m. at Wake County Justice Center, room 2700.
Proposed Budget Cuts and Tax Decreases
The budget, presented by Wake County Manager David Ellis on May 7, promises to enhance the county’s services while remaining financially prudent. The proposed budget highlights a tax rate cut from 65.7 to 51.05 cents per $100 valuation, a notable 22% reduction. This decrease, however, could lead to an increase in total amounts payable for some residents.
Revenue Boost for Growing Population Needs
Wake County Board of Commissioner chair, Shinica Thomas, believes the extra revenue is essential for serving the fast-growing county population. Thomas emphasized the priority of public safety, education, and housing in the county’s budget. The fiscal year is set to run from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
Investment in Education
Ellis proposed an additional $49 million investment into Wake County Public School System, increasing the total to around $693 million for 2025. This marks a significant portion of the county budget, with more than $1.1 billion, approximately 54%, dedicated to public education.
Upcoming Hearings and Meetings
Following Monday’s hearing, another public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, 7 p.m., at the Commons Building in Raleigh. The county commissioners are projected to adopt the budget on June 3, during their 5 p.m. meeting at the justice center.
