TL/DR –

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed several bills, including one aimed at ensuring access to contraceptives. Youngkin defended the veto, asserting he supports contraceptive access but cannot infringe upon the religious freedoms of Virginians. The governor also contended that contraceptive rights are already protected under the Constitution.

Virginia Governor Vetoed Bill Protecting Access to Contraceptives

Virginia’s Republican Governor, Glenn Youngkin, vetoed a series of bills on Friday, including a bill aiming to ensure access to contraceptives. “While I anticipate future cooperation with the General Assembly, I must currently address several bills unfit to become law,” Youngkin’s office shared.

The legislation related to contraception was among those vetoed. Despite his support for access to contraception, Youngkin emphasized it shouldn’t infringe upon the religious freedoms of Virginians.

In his veto statement, Youngkin explained the bill unnecessarily broadens a cause of action against political subdivisions, parents, and medical professionals. He vowed to continue upholding his oath to the US and Virginia Constitutions.

The vetoed bill from the State House and Senate declared a person’s right to obtain contraceptives should not be hampered by any law or policy that restricts access to contraceptives. Youngkin countered by stating contraceptive rights are already Constitutionally protected.

The governor initially proposed substitute language that would make birth control access a policy, not a new law, as reported by WRC-TV. However, upon expiry of his motion, the original bill was presented to him.

Youngkin Shows Continued Support for Contraceptives Despite Veto

Despite the veto, Youngkin reiterated his support for contraceptives, highlighting their importance in fostering a culture of life and reducing abortions. In reaction to the veto, the Virginia Democratic Party criticized the governor, accusing him of indifference towards Virginians’ health and rights.

“Contraception aids in managing numerous health conditions and Youngkin’s decision not to protect it harms thousands,” Susan Swecker, Virginia Democratic Party Chair, said in a press release. She accused Youngkin and Republicans of continuously disregarding health and freedom.
