Remembering Leon Raymond “Lee” Poinsett of Swartz Creek

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at the age of 93, Swartz Creek’s Leon Raymond “Lee” Poinsett passed away at Springvale Assisted Living.

A memorial service to commemorate Lee’s life is planned to be held at a future date.

Celebrating the Life of Lee Poinsett

Lee was born on January 14, 1932, in Flint, Michigan, to the late Raymond and Ethel (Shields) Poinsett. His educational journey began at Bendle High School in Burton, graduating with the Class of 1949, and later attending the General Motors Institute.

During his years at Bendle High, he fell in love with his high school sweetheart, Beverly Brooks. They exchanged vows on November 24, 1951, at the Lincoln Park United Methodist Church in Flint, MI.

Lee’s Contribution and Achievements

Lee proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1952-1954. His leadership skills were apparent as he was a past president of the Flint Council of PTAs and volunteered for several years as a member of the Flint Executive Service Corps.

He held membership at the Flint Elks Lodge No 222 for over three decades. Before retiring in 1987 from the AC Spark Plug Division of GM, where he was Resident Comptroller at the AC Spark Plug Wichita Falls, Texas plant from 1978-83.

Lee: The Family Man and Sports Enthusiast

Lee was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and ice fishing with his brother, Ace. He was a dedicated member of Hurley Health and Fitness for many years. His greatest joy was his family. His sons, David and Scott, were the light of his life. Lee and Beverly cherished their summers spent in the Traverse City area.

Remembering Lee: Surviving Family Members

Beverly, his loving wife, survives him; sons, David and his partner Mary of Traverse City, MI, and Scott and Helen of Grand Blanc; grandsons, Dan (Mona) of Novi, MI and Matt of Poulsbo, WA; great-grandchildren, Logan, Josephine, May, Zain, Lujain of Novi and Gwen and Grey of Poulsbo; special friend, Debra Trowbridge.

Lee leaves behind many cherished sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

Lee was reunited in death with his parents and his brother, Ace.
