Revolutionary Diet: Man Sheds 150lbs with Simple Food Swaps
Fighting Obesity: A Weight Loss Journey
Imagine being told by your doctor that you might not live to see your children graduate from high school due to your weight and health condition. This was the terrifying reality for Jose Matos, who used to weigh over 500 pounds. Struggling with Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, the possibility of premature death haunted him.
Turning Point for Better Health
However, it wasn’t until another health scare that Jose decided to take drastic measures to change his lifestyle. He transformed his diet and incorporated exercise into his daily routine, leading to a weight loss of over 150 pounds. His persistence and dedication were so inspiring that he won one of the top spots in the 2024 “Submit Your Fit” contest for the most inspirational fitness journeys among members of EoS Fitness, a popular fitness chain.
Battling Weight Gain
As a child, Jose was husky, and his weight continued to increase during his college years due to a lack of physical activity and poor diet choices. He admits that his dietary habits were atrocious, often consuming fast food multiple times a day and snacking late into the night. His daily calorie intake was estimated to be around 6000.
Health Complications
In 2021, Jose was hospitalized due to diabetic ketoacidosis, a severe complication of diabetes. The following year, his weight peaked at 525 pounds, leading to further health problems like lower back pain, knee pain, and other chronic discomfort. Despite trying several diets, his weight kept fluctuating until he was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. This health scare became the turning point for Jose to take control of his health.
Weight Loss Transformation
Jose began his journey to better health by changing his diet. He stopped consuming processed, frozen, and fast food, instead focusing on whole, protein-rich foods like chicken, steak, and fish. High-protein foods are known to keep you feeling satisfied and energized. He also started tracking his calorie intake to ensure a daily deficit, and avoided certain trigger foods that would lead to overeating.
The Power of Exercise
Alongside dietary changes, Jose began exercising, starting with 30-minute walks and later on adding home workouts like squats to his routine. As he lost weight, he also started going to the gym, focusing on push-pull workouts and cardio exercises. Now, he works out six days a week and participates in physical challenges like the Spartan Race obstacle course.
Weight Loss Success and Tips
Jose’s weight loss journey has been incredible. He now weighs 375 pounds and does not need medication for Type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. His goal weight is 240 pounds. To others embarking on a similar journey, he offers a few tips:
- Weight-loss drugs aren’t always the solution: Jose attempted using a weight-loss drug but found it had side effects and wasn’t beneficial for him.
- Create a support system: Having the right people around you to provide guidance and support can be crucial for sustained weight loss.
- Control your cravings: If you have a craving, it may be better to have a small portion of the food and get it out of your system rather than trying to avoid it altogether.
- View exercise as a privilege: Appreciate the ability to move and exercise, and tap into your motivation when your willpower is low.
