Fitness Options in Toronto: The Shift Toward Affordable Gyms

As the cost of gym memberships in Toronto rise, a growing number of residents are seeking out more affordable fitness alternatives.

Despite the increasing popularity of high-end fitness clubs like Sweat and Tonic, Altea Active, and the recent addition, UNITY Fitness, many Torontonians are expressing concerns about their steep prices.

Cost of High-End Fitness Clubs in Toronto

Memberships at Sweat and Tonic range from $180 to $1,250 per month, while Altea Active’s summer rates start at $74.95 every other week.

Similar to other luxury gyms in Toronto, UNITY, too, offers a comprehensive membership with an array of facilities for $95 per month.

“This is an amazing price considering it gives you access to our 45,000 sq ft state-of-the-art fitness facility,” Adam Reynolds, Head of Strategy and Operations at UNITY Fitness & Hospitality told Now Toronto.

Torontonians Seeking Affordable Fitness Solutions

While gyms are becoming increasingly luxurious, more and more Torontonians seem to be opting for less expensive ways to stay fit. Fitness influencer @chrispoletek shared on TikTok how he switched from a $200 per month gym to Goodlife as the former was too crowded for him to complete a good workout.

“It was all just about fashion, the nicest outfits. [Goodlife] has everything you need. You don’t need a fancy gym to get a good workout in,” he commented.

The Popularity of Goodlife Among Torontonians Seeking Affordable Gyms

Goodlife is a popular choice for Torontonians seeking a well-equipped gym without a hefty price tag. Another TikToker, @vlad.zamriifit, rated Goodlife as 8.5 out of 10 on his list of Toronto gyms.

Though Goodlife is considered more affordable, it still costs over $50 per month for new members.

Affordable Boutique Gyms and Outdoor Fitness Options in Toronto

Small boutique gyms around the city like Fuzion Fitness offer fitness classes, full equipment, and even a women’s-only area for $30 per month.

During warmer months, several affordable fitness groups in the city advocate for outdoor exercising, such as Body Buster Fitness. These classes are inclusive of all fitness levels and often use bodyweight exercises.

City-Provided Affordable Gyms in Toronto

However, the most affordable gyms are provided by the city themselves. FitnessTO has a year-long membership ranging from $190 to $300, which includes access to over 40 weight rooms and 30 indoor pools across the city.

Additionally, there’s an extensive list of gyms with weight rooms, cardio machines, fitness classes, and public pools around the city that are free of cost to all residents.
