TL/DR –

The US is planning a partial evacuation of its embassy in Iraq and the voluntary departure of dependants of US personnel from the Middle East due to rising security concerns. The decision comes amidst tensions with Iran over its nuclear program, with reports suggesting Israel is prepared to attack Iran and US sites in neighboring Iraq may be targeted in response. The Iranian mission to the UN responded on social media stating that Iran is not seeking a nuclear weapon, and emphasized the need for diplomacy over militarism.

U.S. Preps Partial Embassy Evacuation in Iraq amid Middle East Security Concerns

The U.S. is poised for a partial evacuation of its embassy in Iraq and has authorized “voluntary departure” of dependents of U.S. personnel from Middle East locations such as Bahrain, Kuwait and the UAE due to escalating regional security concerns.

On Wednesday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorised the departure of military dependents in the region, citing “developing tension”.

The U.S. Department of State explained the order for nonessential personnel to leave the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was to ensure the safety of Americans, both domestically and internationally.

U.S. President Donald Trump, justifying the move, stated that the Middle East “could be a dangerous place”.

He also highlighted the ongoing issue with Iran’s nuclear ambitions, asserting that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon, under any circumstances.

These actions come amid growing uncertainty as U.S.-Iran nuclear programme talks reach an impasse. CBS reported that U.S. officials have been informed of Israel’s readiness to attack Iran, with potential retaliation targeting American sites in Iraq.

This move is reportedly a result of high-level discussions between senior military officials and the Trump administration concerning the stalled negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme.

The partial evacuation of the embassy in Baghdad and voluntary evacuation of other embassies in the region are seen as precautions against potential Iranian-aligned attacks.

According to Iran’s UN mission, Iran is not seeking a nuclear weapon and criticizes U.S. militarism for fueling instability. They advocate for diplomacy over militarism.

Meanwhile, Iranian Defence Minister General Aziz Nasirzadeh stated that while they hope for successful talks with the U.S., they are prepared to respond to any aggression.

The next round of U.S.-Iran talks, tentatively scheduled for this weekend in Oman, will focus on limitations to Tehran’s nuclear programme in exchange for lifting sanctions.
