Report Reveals Suicide Trends in Washtenaw County, Michigan
According to a recent report by the Washtenaw County Health Department, the general suicide rate among residents has been decreasing since 2018. However, the report shows that men and white residents are most impacted.
The 2023 preliminary data reveals that suicide claimed 37 residents, a count below both the Michigan and national average, say officials.
Health Department epidemiologist, Kaitlin Schwarz, states that this report will provide valuable data to local mental health professionals and researchers for improving mental health conditions and preventing suicides.
The report further reveals that 89% of those who died were white, marking a 7% increase from 2021, and 74% were men, a trend that aligns with national figures.
Suicide rates among Men and White Residents in 2021
In 2021, the suicide rate among white residents was 14 people per 100,000 residents. Furthermore, data between 2021 and 2023 show that men accounted for 74% of suicide deaths, a statistic that is consistent with both state and national trends.
“Suicides in 2022 and 2023 mostly involved men, following local trends over the past two decades, as well as trends seen across Michigan and the United States,” the report notes.
Current Suicide Trends among Men in Washtenaw County
Despite an increase in the county’s male suicide rates since the period of 2014-2016, the rate continues to stay below the statewide average. Between 2021 and 2023, 87% of firearm suicides involved men. Suicide attempts were most common among men aged 25-44, but middle-aged men completed suicide more often.
The report also noted an increase in suicide attempts among both male and female residents aged 25-44 and above 65, with young women having the highest rate of suicide attempts overall.
