Congress Receives Special Counsel Report on Biden’s Classified Docs

TL/DR –

Special counsel Robert Hur has given Congress his report on President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents while out of office. The investigation was launched after approximately two dozen classified documents dating back to Biden’s time as vice president were found at his personal home and office. Although the report’s details are not yet public, earlier reports suggest instances of carelessness but indicate the removal of classified documents was likely a mistake rather than a criminal act.

Robert Hur Shares Results of Joe Biden’s Classified Documents Investigation

Special counsel Robert Hur has sent to Congress his report on his year-long investigation into Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents while not in presidency. This represents one of the final stages before the report’s public release.

The White House has reviewed a draft of the report and announced it won’t censor any information collected by Hur. This was confirmed by White House spokesperson, Ian Sams, who also stated that the president’s legal team had completed their review of the report and would not claim executive privilege over any section of the report.

Earlier this week, Attorney General Merrick Garland informed key legislative members that Hur had finished his investigation. The probe examined how approximately two dozen classified documents ended up at Biden’s personal residence and office.

The documents in question are from Biden’s tenure as vice president, with some bearing “top secret” markings. Garland named Hur as special counsel in 2023 after ten documents were found at the Penn-Biden Center in Washington, D.C., where Biden had an office post vice presidency.

A second discovery of more documents in Biden’s home garage in Wilmington, Delaware, prompted Garland’s decision to assign Hur as special counsel.

The investigation involved interviews with up to 100 current and former officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, and Biden’s son, Hunter. In October, Hur’s team spent two days interviewing Biden himself.

Observers from ABC News reported that Biden’s handling of classified documents appeared to be careless rather than criminal based on witness interviews. Biden has always denied any personal wrongdoing and expressed surprise at the documents’ existence.

The Hur investigation has proceeded quietly in the shadow of special counsel Jack Smith’s inquiry into former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified records, which resulted last year in a 40-count indictment. Trump has consistently pleaded not guilty.

Records released by the National Archives indicate Biden’s legal team cooperated with officials, contrasting with accusations against Trump, who was charged with deliberately withholding classified records from investigators.
