A Florida sheriff’s deputy, Sgt. Dave Musgrove, rescued a mother and her two children from a car crash involving a motorcycle that was speeding at over 100 mph. The incident, which occurred on February 8, was captured on Musgrove’s body camera; he performed chest compressions on an infant until the baby began to breathe again. Although the infant is in intensive care with a brain injury, the family has praised Musgrove’s actions, and Sheriff Bill Prummell commended his “poise and calm demeanor” during the chaotic situation.

Florida Sheriff’s Deputy Saves Baby’s Life in Car Crash

Charlotte County Deputy Sgt. Dave Musgrove became a hero the night of Feb. 8, quickly aiding a mother and her two young children involved in a catastrophic car crash. Details of his heroic act were caught on body camera footage.

Musgrove was on duty, patrolling a state highway close to Englewood, when a motorcyclist sped past him at an estimated speed of more than 100 mph (160 km). Moments later, his vehicle’s camera recorded the motorbike crashing into another vehicle.

On reaching the scene, Musgrove extracted a toddler from a booster seat in the rear of the crashed car. He handed the child to a passerby and returned to the vehicle to attend to an infant trapped under the now-deceased motorcyclist.

With the assistance of other drivers, Musgrove removed the motorcyclist and cut a seatbelt to free the infant from the car seat. The baby was not breathing, prompting Musgrove to perform chest compressions until the infant resumed breathing, as captured in the body camera footage.

“Sgt. Musgrove’s actions are commendable,” stated Sheriff Bill Prummell. “His calm demeanor at the scene of chaos and tragedy ultimately saved a child’s life.”

The mother, Kayleigh Foley, expressed her gratitude to Musgrove, calling him a hero. Her infant daughter is currently receiving treatment for a brain injury in a St. Petersburg hospital.

Despite the widespread praise, Musgrove remains humble. He stated at a news conference, “Anyone with the same training we’ve received would do the same thing.”
